When is Cosmetic Gum Surgery Recommended?

Cosmetic gum surgery is sometimes necessary to get the perfect smile you have always wanted. While the appearance of your teeth is one of the first things people notice during social interactions, the gums are a major part of the way your smile looks.

You only have a great smile when your gums look healthy and are proportional to your teeth. Think of the gums as the frame, while teeth are the work of art. A poor frame takes away from an art piece.

Some of the issues commonly addressed with cosmetic gum surgery include a gummy smile or receding gums that make teeth appear longer than they are. Gum treatments do not just improve the appearance of a person's smile, but they also improve the patient's dental health.

Issues that can be fixed with cosmetic gum surgery

Gummy smile

A gummy smile refers to when a patient's teeth play a more prominent role than they should when smiling. It makes your teeth look smaller than they are, which hurts the way your smile looks.

A gummy smile can be caused by genetics or excessive growth of gum tissue. It can also be a result of a hyperactive upper lip that moves too far up when smiling. At times, a person's teeth can also appear short as a result of habits like teeth grinding.

Receding gums

Receding gums make your teeth appear elongated. It can also make the teeth appear wider than they are.

Receding gums are one of the symptoms of gum disease. It is caused by bacteria not being adequately removed from tooth surfaces, allowing them to infiltrate the gumline. This leads to inflammation of the gums as your body tries to fight off the bacteria in the plaque.

Gum recession can also be the result of brushing your teeth too hard. Be sure to brush slowly with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Gum recession should always be taken seriously since it can lead to serious dental and health issues. If gum disease is left unaddressed, it can lead to an infection or the teeth falling out of their sockets. An infection of the gums can easily spread to other areas of the mouth.

Gum surgery restores smiles

Many smile-related gum issues can be rectified with cosmetic gum surgery. The first thing the dentist will do is address any underlying gum disease by removing plaque and tartar from the person's teeth via a dental cleaning. The dentist might also use scaling and root planing to clean underneath the gums.

Removing the bacteria helps to fight the infection and promotes healing.

The dentist might also use crown lengthening to push back a gummy smile and expose more of the person's teeth.
